Overview

There are many possible situations and options for users wishing to host their domains on Nixsys PAUS. This system is quite flexible to fill the needs of its users. Here's a partial list of situations and solutions:

Situation: I need Nixsys PAUS to host my domain. I have my own machine to host the web and mail services.

Solution: DNS Hosting

Situation: My machine is hosting the DNS for my domain. I want to build a website, but don't have time to maintain the necessary software packages.

Solution: Domain Web Hosting.

Situation: I'm running a DNS server for our family's domain. All of us want e-mail accounts on that domain, but don't have the necessary resources to do so.

Solution: Virtual Mail Hosting.

Situation: I need Nixsys PAUS to host my domain and domain website.

Solution: DNS Hosting and Domain Web Hosting.

Situation: Just bought a domain, but have no desire to host a website. I just want e-mail addresses for myself and my friends.

Solution: DNS Hosting and Virtual Mail Hosting.

Situation: We're a company of thirty (30) people. We need a place to host our website and e-mail accounts.

Solution: DNS Hosting, Domain Web Hosting, and Virtual Mail Hosting.

Of course, these are not all the possible situations, just some common scenarios with the solutions this system can provide. Whatever the status of your organization, the resources on this system can provide some assistance.

DNS Hosting

Nixsys PAUS can act as primary and secondary nameservers for any domain and any subdomains thereof. If a user is providing services (mail, shell, web, etc) for the domain on a local machine, the DNS records hosted by this system will point to the IP address of the user's local machine. If this system will be providing resources for a domain, then the DNS records hosted by this system will point to our IP addresses.

To host a domain here, a user must:

  1. E-mail the DNS administrator, hostmaster -AT- nixsyspaus -DOT- org, with the following information:
    • The domain name to be hosted.
    • If the user is providing services for the domain, then include the IP address that the DNS records should point to.
    • Any subdomains under the domain. The "www" subdomain is required, even if its DNS record points to the same IP address as the domain.
    • If the user is providing services for the subdomain(s) and the IP address is different from the domain, include the IP address that the DNS records should point to for each subdomain.
  2. Login to the domain name registration service (where the domain was purchased) and set Nixsys PAUS as the primary and secondary nameservers.

Our nameservers are on the same Class C netblock. While fully functional, this is not an ideal situation for users hosting a domain on this system. To remedy this situation, users may purchase tertiary nameserver services from our colocation provider, Waveform Technology for a mere $2 USD per month. Users assume fully responsibility in acquiring and maintaining this service. Visit Waveform's site to find out more about these and other excellent services they provide. If this system is being used only for DNS Hosting, reading the subsequent sections is not necessary.

Domain Web Hosting

Domain Web Hosting provides users with HTTP resources for their domains. If accessible, the public will be able to connect to the domain's web site using a web browser. Users intending to use Domain Web Hosting on this system must already have DNS Hosting configured and have read and understood the Web Hosting section of this site.

To manage Domain Web Hosting on this system, users must message the Webmaster, webmaster -AT- nixsyspaus -DOT- org, and provide the DocumentRoot (subfolder of web space) and ServerName directives for each domain and subdomain, and any other applicable directives.

Secure Web Hosting

Secure Web Hosting allows users to transmit encrypted data over HTTP. This is useful for e-commerce sites, secure webmail interfaces, and / or any other situation when sensitive data, like account information, must be transferred over HTTP. Users intending to utilize Secure Web Hosting on this system must already have DNS Hosting configured.

Due to the nature of the TLS / SSL protocol, it is not possible to have multiple TLS / SSL-enabled hosts on the same IP address. To configure Secure Web Hosting on Nixsys PAUS, users must purchase an IP address from our colocation provider, Waveform Technology for a mere $1 USD per month. Users assume fully responsibility in acquiring and maintaining this service. Visit Waveform's site to find out more about these and excellent other services they provide.

After acquiring an IP address from Waveform, the user must provide the DNS administrator, hostmaster -AT- nixsyspaus -DOT- org, with the hostname and IP of the TLS / SSL-enabled host and the Webmaster, webmaster -AT- nixsys -DOT- bz, with the Domain Web Hosting information.

The final step in the process is choosing a system to be the Certificate Authority (CA) for the secure web host. Many commercial and some free CAs exist on the Internet. Nixsys PAUS is also a CA and provides certificates to users hosting TLS / SSL-based services on this system. To request a certificate, send an e-mail to the Security Team, security -AT- nixsyspaus -DOT- org, after reading and understanding the information in the TLS / SSL section of this site.

Virtual Mail Hosting

Virtual Mail Hosting provides access to the Mail System using the Secure WebMail interface without forcing the accounts to be localized. Virtual Mail accounts do not have access to the resources other users have when connecting via SSH. This is useful when a group has one webmaster (the only local account) who uploads content for the group's Domain Web Host and other virtual accounts used for accessing only the Mail System. To have Nixsys PAUS provide Virtual Mail Hosting resources, users must have DNS Hosting set up and have read and understood the Secure WebMail section and TLS / SSL section of this site. To set up Virtual Mail Hosting, a user must:

  1. Decide which account name will receive mail for the abuse and postmaster accounts (required by RFC2142).
  2. Contact the Postmaster, postmaster -AT- nixsyspaus -DOT- org, with a list of the Virtual Mail account names and temporary passwords for each account, until each user can login to change their password.
